1. What inspired you to write this book? Boredom
during the pandemic. There was only so much gardening I could do. Although
the jars of homegrown tomato sugo were great.
2. What exactly is it about and who is it written for? The
Starnberg Series is a collection of books about the lives and loves of gay
women working in the Arts. Primarily opera, theatre and film. The books
are set in southern Germany and London.
3. What do you hope readers will get out of reading
your book? I hope they will fall in love with the characters, who are
often complex. I hope they will enjoy the erotic scenes. If my books spark a
new interest in the Arts world, it would be a bonus.
4. How did you decide on your book’s title and cover
design? For the first book I suggested a view of Lake Starnberg in
Bavaria, which the publishers’ graphic artists achieved brilliantly. The second
book centers around a famous pop/folk singer. The view from the stage of a
stadium concert reflects the subject matter. The titles of all my books
are inspired by the great gay icon Dusty Springfield’s hit songs. Her
music is enjoying a revival which is great.
5. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow
writers – other than run!? I spent my life thinking I couldn’t
– then found that I could. Open the laptop and try!
6. What trends in the book world do you see -- and where do
you think the book publishing industry is heading? The pandemic gave
book reading a boost. Let us hope that it hasn’t entirely diminished. The
danger in the long term is the attitude of kids. If efforts aren’t made in the
schools to convey a greater love of the written word, as opposed to blowing
things up on a screen, then the publishing industry is in trouble.
7. Were there experiences in your personal life or
career that came in handy when writing this book? My books utilize
my life experience in my profession. The characters are entirely imaginary, but
it is impossible not to ignore the odd character trait, or actual
occurrence.
8. How would you describe your writing style? Which writers
or books is your writing similar to? I write lesbian romance books. A
niche genre. Although I hope the characters and story lines are compelling
enough to interest a broader reading public. And everyone enjoys some erotica.
Don’t they?
9. What challenges did you overcome in the writing of this
book? None other than learning by doing getting a publisher and gaining
confidence in proof-reading. And overcoming the conviction that I couldn’t
write prose.
10. If people can buy or read one book this week or month,
why should it be yours? I think they will be both moved and entertained,
fall in love with the characters, and want to continue turning the
pages.
